Waterproof Digital Cameras - Digital Clarity of the Dry Kind

Digital cameras have a major advantage over film cameras in almost every way. They allow for greater picture clarity, the ability to adjust a lot more about the picture while you take it and after, you can upload to a computer easier, you can edit and print without going to a store, and a lot more. Why anyone would want to use film again is hard to image. However digital cameras are not without their faults! First and foremost is the problem of water. Electronics and water just do not get along. So how do you go about taking pictures in the rain, or on a boat, or near a waterfall, or even underwater? You'd be perfectly within your right to be worried around spraying water, and downright in dread if you had to take it underwater.

There is no need to worry, or fear that underwater assignment anymore. Waterproof digital cameras have been around for a while and will allow you to take those pictures without ruining the camera. Waterproof digital cameras are design with special materials to seal up the camera housing which keeps water out. Not all digital cameras will be built like this so if you're looking for a waterproof camera make sure it actually says waterproof on it. A waterproof camera will be ideal for outdoor use where there is rain, fog, mist and other moisture elements. A small amount of moisture is relatively easy to keep out and shouldn't be a problem.

Waterproof digital cameras can only be used in certain places. The reason for this is that like many other waterproof products they are only rated for certain amounts of moisture, or can only go so many feet underwater. Any deeper and the part that keeps the water out may fail. Read the details and description to make sure that you know what you're getting.

If you plan on going underwater then there are several options available. Since most 'waterproof' digital cameras can only go so far down, usually 10-20 feet, they would be perfect for most shallow picture taking like at a pool with the kids. Some companies like Kodak offer disposable waterproof cameras. This type would be perfect for a day at the beach or a trip to the pool. Imagine the fun your kids will have being able to take pictures of each other and their friends and post them to facebook. Not many people get that great underwater shot.

For a more serious photographer who wants to take their digital camera underwater and go deep down the best thing to do is get a waterproof underwater camera housing. This is a clear container, usually made of a type of plastic, which will contain your camera and let you manipulate it deep down. These are not for everyone and should only be considered for the serious photographer or diver.
